Featured Designer: French Silver
July’s Featured Designer is, French Silver! French Silver is a shop as hot as the July sun, made up of a dynamic duo of two sisters that have a true knack for brightening a person’s day with just one look at their creations. Alexia and Jennifer see French Silver as a passion first, and a business second, which makes their crafts as unique as can be. Not only will their products put a smile on your face, but their story will too!
French Silver is a two person textile design shop. Sisters, Alexia and Jennifer, create everything themselves in their home workshops.
2. What is the history behind your business?
Alexia started out refinishing furniture, creating chalkboards out of vintage frames and repurposing items to make jewelry organizers. It then evolved into collecting vintage treasures (a symptom of spending too much time at flea markets and thrift stores), creating throw pillows and making homemade greeting cards.
Jennifer joined the team (technically the smallest team possible) in October of 2013 when the workload became more than Alexia could handle on her own.
We want our designs to be unique and fun. We love getting messages saying “I’m at work dying laughing at your towels” or “My mom cried she loved the recipe towels so much” Our inspiration comes from either wanting to make someone laugh or having the satisfaction that we made something that someone really appreciates.
4. What is your favorite part about your business?
I love having a creative outlet. I would be doing this anyway even if I didn’t make money (but it’s still nice making money).
Right now, my favorite thing to make is party favor bags. The bags are a fairly new addition to our shop and I’m having fun coming up with new designs.
6. Do you have any future plans for your business?
Right now Jennifer and I are taking formal art lessons. We call it “uppin’ our game.” We sometimes have great ideas, but just don’t know how to get the idea we have in our head onto paper. We would like every piece that we put out there to be 100% our artwork. I’d also like to take an Illustrator class. Everything I know about creating graphics is self-taught.
It’s mostly about just the two of us being able to make a living and have fun while doing it. For now, we don’t mind keeping it small and just enlisting extra help around the holidays. We sell to West Elm and The Atlanta High Museum of Art and we have quite a few wholesale accounts outside of Georgia that keep us busy. I have a little boy in preschool, so maybe once he’s older I’ll be ready to step it up a notch.
7. What advice would you give to someone who is aspiring to get into the craft business?
You just have to put yourself out there, even if you think you aren’t ready. And just keep evolving and perfecting your art. No one is born an expert.
