I am a designer of gift and home accessories, as well as apparel. We sell pretty much anything we have ever wanted to, which varies from tea towels, kitchen towels, pet apparel, and by special request, magic wands. I operate a small boutique shop in the Lincoln Park area of Chicago.
2. What is the story behind how your business came to be?
I love to accessorize and shop! I figured if I can do that for fun, I should try to make a business out of it. Fortunately, I have been quite successful doing it! The name of the company, Sprinkle Cheese Designs, is meant to be as fun for people to say, as it is to own and operate!
I would like to say alcohol, but really it comes from simply living and breathing. Yesterday, for example, I went for a run with my dog. I saw butterflies at the Lincoln Park Zoo and decided I should make a tea towel out of it! It’s truly a gift that I can find inspiration in absolutely anything if I put my mind to it.
4. What is your favorite part about your business?
Freedom. I love being free to design and produce whatever I want, whenever I want, and run the business how I want. I love the freedom to wear flip flops, pajamas, or even women’s underwear to work if I wanted.
5. What is your favorite product that you make or sell for your business?
I sell a flour sack tea towel, that I feel so passionately about, that I believe it has the ability to solve world peace and cure cancer. In general, my favorite product is usually my most recent creation. The “magic wands” are a hot commodity!
I would like to open up a shop in San Francisco. That is the goal.
7. What advice would you give to someone who is aspiring to get into this type of business?
Keep it real, and be true to yourself. Otherwise you are just wasting your life.
