What is organic cotton and how is it different from regular cotton?

Organic cotton is grown using methods and materials that have a low impact on the environment. Organic production systems replenish and maintain soil fertility, reduce the use of toxic and persistent pesticides and fertilizers, and build biologically diverse agriculture. Third-party certification organizations verify that organic producers use only methods and materials allowed in organic production. Organic cotton is grown without the use of toxic and persistent pesticides and synthetic fertilizers. In addition, federal regulations prohibit the use of genetically engineered seed for organic farming. There is a myriad of organizations spearheading sustainability and ecological initiatives but here are a few to keep in mind when it comes to apparel.

Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS):This international organization upholds a detailed processing standard for textiles made from organic fibers, including cotton.
Global Recycle Standard (GRS):The GRS is an international, voluntary, standard that sets requirements for third-party certification of recycled content, as well as social and environmental practices and chemical restrictions.
Sustainable Apparel Coalition (SAC):The SAC features a consortium of retailers, brands, and suppliers, in the apparel, textile, and footwear industries.
Oregon Tilth:This non-profit organization focuses on supporting and advocating organic food and farming.

Organic cotton uses 91% LESS water than conventional cotton. Also, it is used without toxic chemicals keeping our water clean. All accessories, dyes, and other inputs must meet certain environmental and toxicological criteria to qualify.
