Featured Designer: Sea Street Graphics
Have you ever had thoughts about taking a stroll off the beaten path to start on a journey that involves a true passion? John and Nancy from Sea Street Graphics sure did, and they weren’t afraid to make the leap from corporate to creative to start their own successful business. If you’re looking for an extra shove in the right direction to make this kind of decision, let this month’s Featured Designer provide you with some inspiration!
Sea Street Graphics has been the leader in the field of eco-friendly water-based screen printing for more than 20 years on the mid-coast of Maine. We have printed for several windjammers on the coast of Maine and have an excellent relationship with all of them. Our services are of the highest standard and our pricing is extremely competitive.
What makes Sea Street truly unique and innovative is that we do custom design and printing. So if you have a logo or design that you would like to have printed, call us and we have the ability to print your design on the shirt of your choice. Remember, every time that a shirt is worn it is a walking advertisement for your business.
Our philosophy is about making products that create less environmental waste. Since 1990 Sea Street Graphics has only used water based inks. Water based inks do not contain any petroleum derivatives. The other inks used in apparel printing use plastisol which will leach PVC’s and phthalates into the environment. Most shirt printers use plastisol inks because they may be left unattended without drying or clogging a printing screen and must be cleaned using solvents or other products. Our inks are primarily water with pigments and our screens are cleaned with just water. Water based inks are 100% washable, wearable, and may be ironed, without fear of the design sticking to the iron or getting ruined in a home dryer. Water based printing is cleaner and put simply, better for all.
What is the story behind how your business came to be?
After more than 30 years in the corporate and medical fields, my husband and I decided that we wanted to own a business. We have a home on the coast of Maine and Sea Street Graphics became available in 2012. Many of the reasons making owning Sea Street as a business appealed to us are the same reasons that we have been your apparel printer of choice:
Eco-friendly water based inks on high quality garments
Quality of workmanship
Living in Maine on the coast gives us endless inspiration for our original designs. Living in an area that is so about the beauty of nature made us want to do something that won’t ruin the habitat for the future.
What is your favorite part about your business?
We take pride in providing a quality product to our customers and providing excellent contact and customer service with our clients. We enjoy having an ongoing relationship with the clients and seeing them return.
We have started to design flour sack towels in 2014 under the Sea Street Scullery design. Our motto is “a kitchen tradition from our hands to yours.” Kitchen towels are a wonderful piece of cloth which are extremely absorbent. A hand printed flour sack towel adds some style to your kitchen. These generously sized towels (29” x30) work great for covering rising bread, drying glasses and dishes, and keeping food wrapped and warm on the table or in a picnic basket. They also make a wonderful housewarming, birthday, wedding, hostess gift or unique gift for that cook in your life. Machine wash, cold water, tumble dry and iron on reverse side as needed.
What advice would you give to someone who is aspiring to get into this type of business?
Doing something that you love on some level, that also plays into your strengths. Being creative was big for Nancy as she had always been involved in crafting and making many items. John had a business background so working the back end of the business was right up his ally. It makes for a great team!
We are very proud of Sea Street and are constantly coming up with new and inventive ways to expand. We just got a new press so we can do smaller orders that are more customized. We would love to hear any ideas to make our business better and would love the opportunity to talk with you to get your ideas pressed into action.
Make sure you stay connected with Sea Street and follow them on their other sites!
